17.03.2009 Siemens supported a study based in Munich to show how a metropolitan region can reduce CO2
emissions in the next few decades to move toward a carbon-free future. The first section
presents scenarios showing how energy efficiency can be improved through various packages
of measures and what role these aspects play in reducing CO2 emissions. The second section
uses a model city district to show how this transformation to a nearly carbon-free metropolis
can be implemented in terms of infrastructure and technology.
Analysis, commissioned by Siemens, the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy,
reveals that it is theoretically possible to reduce the CO2 emissions in an individual urban
district to extremely low levels within a period of only 30 years.
