Electric locomotives from the Eurosprinter family have been operating in freight and
passenger trains since 1993. They are based on a platform concept that not only
enables European rail operators to choose the locomotive best suited to their
particular needs, but also alllows small numbers of locomotives to be produced
economically. The latest models are the four-system European locomotives, which
can operated in all four common European voltage systems. For the first time in
the history of European rail travel, the same locomotive can now run all the way
from the Bosporus to the northern tip of Norway. Currently, 1,400 Eurosprinters are
in operation in 15 countries worldwide, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, Croatia,
Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Hungary.
The world's fastest locomotive is a Eurosprinter: On September 2, 2006, a series-produced
locomotive set the speed record of 357 km/h.
