Desigo protects precious books

13.01.2006

Belarus is taking steps to conserve part of its cultural heritage in the National Library in Minsk for future generations. With the help of Siemens technology.

Booklovers and literary scholars will appreciate the important contribution SBT building automation is making to the preservation of valuable cultural assets in the new home of the Belarus National Library in Minsk. The Desigo V2.3 management system controls air conditioning and humidity in the monumental building, particularly in the rooms in which historic books are kept. These precious works are stored at 0.2° Celsius – essential if they are to be preserved for future generations. SBT International has executed this order in partnership with the Belarus company Entrydell. Automation and Drives was also involved, installing a system for conveying books.

Preliminary discussions started two years ago. Frederik Aberg from SBT INT and Victor Godun, SBT representative in Minsk, succeeded in convincing the decisionmakers in the Belarus metropolis that the Siemens solution was the right one for them. Among other things, they demonstrated the efficiency of the Desigo building management system installed in the Austrian National Archives and Municipal Library in Vienna. The order to carry out the work was eventually won in cooperation with Entrydell.

“It was important for our client to involve a Belarus company and ensure local support,” says Vladimir Poliakovsky, who is responsible for SBT at Entrydell. As Aberg underscores, “it also confirms how important it is to have value-added partners in countries in which we haven’t yet built up a business organization.”

SBT INT aims to use this success to bid for other, similar projects. The SBT team had already demonstrated the capability of the SBT solution for archives and libraries to potential clients at a library conference on Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. “This reference project also improves our chances of being involved as a partner in other projects such as the construction of stadiums or hospitals,” says Aberg.
